Hi, I’m Armaan Sharma, and I’m running for Undergraduate Senate! My interest in running lies primarily in my experience as a Senator for the Associated Students of Ohlone College while dual-enrolled. In this position, I appropriated funds to support teach-ins about topics such as centering intersectionality in discussions of teen dating violence, rallies for Denim Day and sexual assault prevention, and a grant program to provide cash assistance to students experiencing housing insecurity.
As a community-oriented individual with passion for social justice, I hope to foster an environment where students feel empowered in both their advocacy and efforts to improve campus culture.
Here are the ABCs that I stand on:
ADVOCACY
- Enhance awareness of Title IX reporting channels and promote transparency and accountability in enforcement.
- Protect and restore co-op housing while actively supporting initiatives to expand themed housing options.
- Collaborate with university leadership to ensure a permanent prohibition of ICE presence on campus.
- Champion BDS movements by urging university officials to sever ties with corporations like Palantir.
- Advocate for extended amplified noise hours in White Plaza to improve students' ability to protest.
BUREAUCRACY
- Simplify and expedite the New Volunteer Student Organization (NVSO) application process, fostering an inclusive environment where all students can create and lead their own spaces.
- Work with the Office of Student Engagement (OSE) to transition from an annual to a quarterly NVSO application cycle for greater flexibility.
- Expand avenues for student engagement with ASSU, including more frequent direct dialogues and town halls to amplify student voices.
CULTURE
- Allocate increased funding for community arts projects, leveraging the talents of student artists to enrich campus with displays such as murals.
- Support and grow creative initiatives, such as the Annual Big Swap and the emerging student-run thrift store, through targeted funding.
- Develop a dedicated funding system to fund group hikes, outdoor fitness, and nature-based activities that enhance campus health and community well-being.
- Subsidize student transit expenses to improve accessibility and sustainability.
- Establish student discounts (upon presenting Stanford IDs) with local businesses to foster stronger connections between students and the surrounding community.
- Forge partnerships with on-campus vendors like CoHo and Coupa, enabling students to use meal-plan dollars for greater convenience and choice.
