Hi everyone! My name is Casey Chan, and I am a third-year PhD candidate in Chemistry! I am currently serving on the Graduate Student Council and would love the opportunity to be part of the GSC next year. I have learned a lot from my two years on GSC, and have enjoyed advocating for student concerns in areas such as transportation, healthcare, and housing. Along with advocacy, I have also been working on a few key initiatives.

 

I am helping to plan the Graduate Student Appreciation Week (which will be happening in April with more details to come soon!) with the Office of the Vice Provost for Graduate Education, and have advocated for student interests about events and scheduling. I have also been serving on the Nominations Committee on Research, and working with faculty members and the Dean of Research office to create policies for research, for example regarding research funding. I am also working with R&DE staff to improve the food selection in vending machines across campus, as well as better publicizing vending machine locations so that graduate students know where to grab snacks when we're hungry (especially during late nights working!). I am also the GSC Communications Chair, and am responsible for publicizing ASSU and VSO events in the "From the GSC" emails that you receive every week! Throughout the year, I have also advocated for increased Marguerite service and improved parking accessibility, as well as improved housing. 🚍

 

I also tried to pursue impactful initiatives during my first year on the GSC. During my first year, I wrote a student profile series about graduate students from across campus and their work. I have also worked with the Vaden Student Health Advisory Committee (VSHAC) to make healthcare resources on campus more accessible. 

If elected, I would continue to work on initiatives in the areas of food and dining, healthcare, communication, and safety. I would pursue initiatives involving reducing food waste on campus and making vending machines better stocked and more accessible. I would also work with VSHAC to advocate for improved health care plans and clarity about healthcare plan changes. Furthermore, I would like to improve communication from the ASSU about important topics such as funding guidelines and funding application deadlines, increasing support for the GSC treasurers as they are reviewing annual grants each year. I would also like to include cross-VSO communication, potentially through "ASSU-VSO networking" events. Finally, I would like to work with Stanford Department of Public Safety to improve safety on-campus, especially as it relates to car break-ins in residential parking lots.
