Team JEDI: Fun Strikes Back

Petition Topic: Sophomore Class Presidents
Sponsor: avanig07 (Avani Ganesan)

THE J.E.D.I ACTION PLAN

Journey
Remember Admit Weekend and NSO? Maybe you were nervous, didn’t know what to expect, or were worried about how quickly you’d find someone to start conversation with. Regardless of how you started, we all know how it ended with incredible friendships and connections that bring fulfillment and meaning to your daily lives here at Stanford.

The problem is that after Frosh year, there is no Admit Weekend, NSO, or Sophomore-only housing. Understanding how many special individuals are here on campus, Team JEDI is committed to continuing our journey as a collective class and can only do so by also continuing the fostering of introductions to people whom you wouldn’t otherwise meet in your major, residence, or involvements.

The Journey pillar is about keeping the magic of Frosh year alive by creating spaces and opportunities, big and small, for you to meet someone new, discover new communities, and build friendships that last beyond Stanford. See how we plan to make this happen below in our events and initiatives list!

Events and Initiatives

We have money to spend, and you can bet it’ll be used for “fun strikes back” initiatives.

  • Local Love @ Tressider – hosting local restaurants for pop-up food stands (Pizzeria Delfinas, Zareens, MJ Sushi)
  • Grade wedding! Get out your finest cocktail attire and elect the lucky hitched pair
  • Midnight food crawls
    • Quarterly late snack crawls -> Boba stands, tacos, then ice cream
    • Passport cards where students collect stamps from each stop
  • Cross-Campus Collaborations with Student Organizations
    • Catered Indian foods + Stanford Bhangra performances
    • Celebrating diversity by expanding Cultural Holiday Functions (Lunar New Year, Diwali, Holi)
    • Special sophomore FLICKS screening
    • Pre-professional mixer -> SIG, Stanford Finance, SWIM, ASES
  • Campus Night Scavenger Hunt: “Stanford After Dark”
  • Sunset + Picnic + Spikeball @ Lake Lag
  • Dorm Field Day (Let the Olympic Games commence)
    • Inflatable relay, spikeball, tug-of-war, trivia
  • Week 10 On Call Finals Grinds – free coffee, snacks, and whiteboards
  • “Try Something New” Week:
    • Mini-workshops run by clubs: pottery, improv, dance, coding, DJing
  • Date Drop but make it for new friends: Once a month, survey-based meetups with sponsored food and drink (similar to PLATES)
  • Special Lottery Events
    • Free Giants tickets
    • Shoreline concert tickets
  • Class April Fools Day Prank
  • Spring Fling Formal @ the Oval
  • Sophomore Winter Formal @ Cantor Arts Center
  • Soft toilet paper replacements in Sophomore Dorms

Dream-Building

Sophomore year is when students start turning interests into real paths, so I want to support dream-building by creating opportunities for sophomores to explore careers, connect with mentors, and gain early exposure to the fields they’re excited about.

  • Alum career panels by industry
  • Student/Alum tailgates
  • Sophomore Career Discovery Week: a week of panels and networking events for all fields (tech, medicine, public policy, entrepreneurship, arts) with different events each day
  • Open workshops and mixers led by sophomore students in pre-professional clubs
  • Exclusive class-wide career fair
  • Job shadow matching program

Involvement
We know we don’t represent every facet of the student population, so we’re excited to announce club liaisons where student representatives from major organizations serve directory roles to help us better understand the class needs. This includes clubs ranging from culture clubs to pre-professional clubs to art clubs. Whether you have an idea for a shared arts event, a cultural holiday, or a networking event, we would love to work with you! Or if you want to increase awareness of a specific community on campus, we are here to amplify your voice!
